The actor believes the film should be used by vicars to encourage a debate that will get people heading to church.

The flick, set to release next month, is based on Dan Brown's bestseller about a possible child of Jesus Christ.

"I think the movie may end up helping churches do their job," The Sun quoted Hanks as telling US magazine Entertainment Weekly.

"If they put up a sign saying: 'This Wednesday we're discussing the gospel", 12 people show up. But if a sign says: 'This Wednesday we're discussing The Da Vinci Code,' 800 people show up," he added.

The novel and forthcoming movie have been blasted by Catholic church officials who believe the idea of Jesus fathering a child and starting a bloodline that still exists today is ridiculous.
