How did the role of Lord Asriel come about?
It was kind of an accident. The production was delayed and there was a different director at that point of time. As Bond came to an end, my agent checked with them again. They asked if I was interested. And I said, “Of course I want to do it.”

The Golden Compass deals with some interesting themes. Was that part of the appeal?
Yes it was. My fantasy for this movie were the movies I saw as a kid. This film had adult themes in it. And if we get that right it will work well.

It seems that Nicole Kidman will provide some of those scary moments?
She is pretty good at it (laughs), she looks amazing in it. Nicole and I are quite good friends now. So it's very easy to work together.

Everybody keeps on saying that the Catholic Church is going to have a big problem with it.
Well I think that the Catholic Church is going to have broad enough shoulders for this.
