“INSTEAD OF trying for a Taj Mahal look, strive to solve basic problems.” That was Divisional Commissioner Ashok Das during his visit to MY Hospital on Tuesday to review the works undertaken by Indore Development Authority (IDA) and Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) to overhaul the State’s largest government health facility.
Das interacted with many staff members, including nurses and ward boys, and tried to get to know the ground situation. He also visited a few wards to see the patients’ condition. He saw firsthand the filthy conditions prevailing there with choked or overflowing drains, accumulated waste on hospital premises and seepage on many walls among other things.
In an apparent reference to the beautiful front elevation planned as part of ‘Kayakalpa II’ by the IDA, Das admonished engineers and architects supervising the construction works not to go for ‘a Taj Mahal type look’ and instead concentrate on solving basic problems permanently.
However, observing that a lot of thinking had gone into planning the re-haul, Das said, “We are striving to bring the M Y Hospital on par with any big private hospital.”
IDA chairman Madhu Verma, who accompanied Das during the visit, appealed to carry out work in such a manner that “there should be no need to re-do things for at least coming 50 years.” He also asked to bring uniformity in different wards in the hospital, spread over seven floors.

It may be recalled that the IDA had taken responsibility to bring a sea change in the hospital, where leakage and seepage are major problem areas. The IDA has recently floated a tender for about Rs 1.5 crore to carry out the overhauling work at the hospital, which includes repair of toilets, drainage, seepage, ducts and windows apart from elevation changes including painting the façade. Work for repairs in two wards is already going on at a cost of Rs 35 lakh.
IDA CEO C B Singh and Municipal Commissioner Vinod Sharma were also present during the visit. Das and Verma also visited Robert Nursing Home where IDA has made a provision of Rs 10 lakh for repair works.
Das directed that the work be finished by January 26. Dr G C Sepaha and Dr Vijay Sen Yashlaha from the Robert Nursing Home were present during the visit.
