Dawood Ibrahim henchmen Anil Parab was sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday, 22 years after a case of attempt to murder was registered against him in 1984.
Sessions court judge Shrihari Davare convicted Parab on the charge of attempting to murder Hansraj Shah inside the Andheri Metropolitan court in 1984.
Shah was a key witness in the murder case of his brother Nanji Shah, who was allegedly killed by gangster Ashok Joshi in 1983 at Kanjur Marg. Six days before the court shootout, Parab had met Joshi at the Thane jail, where he was promised Rs 25,000 to kill Shah.
On June 6, 1984, Parab — clad in a rickshaw driver’s garb — opened fire inside the Andheri court. Sub inspector of the Bhandup police station, Abdul Sheikh, opened fired in retaliation. Parab and three police officials were injured in the shootout. All were rushed to the Cooper hospital.
This was the last of the 10 cases registered against Parab at different police stations across the city. Four cases were of murder, including one for killing his wife. The shootout case was the last case for the prosecution to nail Parab.
As the case dragged on for 22 years, Parab — who used to allegedly work for the Kunchikuru gang — started working for Dawood Ibrahim.

{{/usCountry}}After the judgment was delivered, a defensive Parab told the court in Marathi that he was not a Dawood aide. “Dawood is a terrorist, I am not. I have three daughters. Judge please show some leniency towards me, it is my daughters’ birthday today,” he cried. The sessions court, which delivered the judgment, is the same courtroom which was twice broken into last week by unidentified persons.
Parab was deported along with Dawood’s brother Iqbal Kaskar from Dubai on April 21, 2003, and has been languishing in Thane jail since then.
