In a letter sent through his lawyer, Nayak said he was prepared to surrender for facilitating a detailed inquiry into the case, said Mumbai police sources.

The move came hours after a non-bailable arrest warrant was issued on Saturday against Mumbai Police's suspended encounter specialist. The Supreme Court on Friday rejected his petition for anticipatory bail.

The anti-corruption bureau had booked Nayak last month on charges of amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The offence was registered following an inquiry against Nayak spanning over nearly two years.

Nayak, a former sub-inspector attached to the city suburb Kandivili police station, shot into fame for killing more than 83 people of underworld gangs in separate shootouts during his posting in the crime branch.

Investigations were initiated in 2003 against him following a petition filed by journalist, Ketan Tirodkar, who had alleged that Nayak had links with the underworld and that he possessed disproportionate assets.
