As the sun shone brightly on Delhi and most parts of the northern plains on Monday, people came out of their woollen cocoons after a particularly long and bitter winter.

The maximum temperature in the national capital rose to near 26 degrees Celsius, as was the case in most places in the plains. A bright sky added to the feeling of warmth to the day.

The minimum temperature in Delhi was 9.8 degrees, normal for this time of the year.

The capital has been reeling under a severe cold wave for over a month with the seasons lowest recorded at 1.9 degrees Celsius on January 2, while the lowest temperature this month was 2.9 degrees on February 2.

The Met office has forecast further rise in the minimum temperatures, signalling an official end to the winter.

The lowest temperature in the plains was 4.9 degrees Celsius recorded at Amritsar in Punjab.

The following are the maximum and minimum temperatures and rainfall in major cities for the 24 hours till Monday morning, with figures in brackets denoting deviations from the average.
