AS Naroda Patiya and Gulbarg Society were burning during the Vishwa Hindu Parishad-sponsored bandh on February 28, 2002, a top police officer constantly called up Sangh Parivar leaders and prominent rioters.

This is one of the preliminary findings from analysis of cellphone calls made during the riots. On Monday, the Jan Sangharsh Manch, a non-government organisation representing the riot victims, submitted the details to the Nanavati-Shah Commission.

The call analysis has revealed that the Deputy Commissioner of Police in 'Zone 4' — of which Narodya Patiya and Gulbarg Society are a part — was in constant touch with leaders of the VHP, BJP and the accused in the riot cases.

The call analysis disclosed that DCP PB Gondiya talked to BJP MLA Mayaben Kodnani, VHP leader Jaydeep Patel and other Bajrang Dal leaders who have been named by eyewitnesses as having led the anti-minority riots in 2002.

"The calls made by this police officer will prima facie show the relevance of the call data analysis," said Jan Sangharsh Manch advocate Mukul Sinha in the covering letter to the Commission.

In New Delhi, Parliamentary Affairs Minister PR Dasmunsi said that the government would consult the law ministry on the Gujarat High Court order that quashed the setting up of the UC Banerjee Committee to probe the Godhra train carnage.
