A 44-year-old highway robber from Haryana’s Mewat has been arrested 13 years after his relatives said he was dead when he had actually escaped to Saudi Arabia on a forged passport to evade arrest.
The arrested was declared a proclaimed offender in three separate cases registered against him. He used to impersonate as a sub-inspector (SI) in Rajasthan police.
Police said the robber, Deen Mohammad alias Deenu, was nabbed by a crime branch team led by ACP KPS Malhotra on Thursday from Jangpura in south Delhi where he had gone to meet his associates and plan a highway robbery in the city.
A country-made pistol along with three cartridges and a stolen motorcycle was recovered from his possession.
The police recovered a fake identity card, showing Deenu as an SI of Rajasthan Police, and two passports issued on forged documents.
Ravindra Yadav, joint CP (crime), said Deenu was wanted in several cases in Haryana and Rajasthan. In 1993, Deenu along with his brother Ismail and other associates robbed a truck in Haryana’s Ballabhgarh.
“When a police team chased them, the robbers fired and an ASI was injured. The policemen retaliated and Ismail was killed. While the other robbers were caught, Deenu escaped but was arrested later. At that time, Deenu was wanted in 23 highway robbery cases,” said Yadav. Deenu was released in 1996.

{{/usCountry}}In 1998, Deenu and his associates were arrested in another crime. In 2001, he fled from police custody after attacking the police when they were being taken to jail from court.
“He fled to Saudi Arabia. After two years he came back to India when his visa expired. He went back to Dubai and renewed his passport from the Indian Embassy in Dubai for further stay,” said Yadav. In 2011, he had to come back as his passport expired.
Deenu never appeared in court in any of the cases after 2001. He tried to fake his death but there was no document to prove it and he was declared a PO in three criminal cases.
