This is what says municipal commissioner Ram Bodh Maurya hinting how LMC can have a humane face. He has begun with decentralizing the whole system involved in issuing death certificates after a meeting of health department on Tuesday.

Earlier, the applicants had to submit the application to the LMC head office in Lalbagh for procuring the certificate. But, now they can submit the application to the zonal offices in six zones. The applicants would be supposed to fill a form giving all the details about the dead accompanied by the proper documents required for the issue of death certificate.

The municipal chief says the easing of process would reduce the work of a family in sorrow.

“It’s inhuman to make members of a family who have lost someone dear to them run for the certificate. We know the death certificate has become essential for the distribution of property, settlement of property and bank account cases that’s why we have made the process easy,” says Maurya.

According to LMC officials the modifying of death certificate issue process is going to end the caucus of LMC employees and middlemen, who used to charge heavily for getting the task done on time. In addition to that it will ensure the registration of deaths in the city.

Although the process of birth registration has not been modified. It still remains the same.

The municipal commissioner has directed Health Department officials to get the records in order.

It may be recalled that the former municipal commissioner was shocked to see that the records of birth and death of last ten years were missing.

He transferred six of the concerned staff members as a punishment.
