The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday demanded that the Maharashtra government declare the state “drought-hit”.

“The absence of monsoon will have a three-fold effect. Shortage of drinking water, lack of fodder for livestock and rising unemployment in the rural areas,” said BJP senior leader Gopinath Munde.

“The government should soon declare drought which will at least allow the residents some relief in the form of government sops.”

Munde added that farmers were facing problems, as the kharif crop sowing, which usually takes place between June 4 and 20, has not yet started.

“Even if the rains come now farmers will not be able to sow cash-rich crops like pulses, but only jowar,” Munde added.

Munde termed the economic package that the Cabinet announced at Sindhudurg as “an eyewash”.

“There needs to be special budgetary allocations for such packages. How can the government claim to dole out this money?”
