THE HIGH rate of 85 per cent on spot placement of the six-month Post Management Programme (PMP) for defence personnel is a result of knowledge learnt at Indian Institute of Management and values and discipline inculcated while in the armed forces, opined Directorate General Resettlement (DGR) Major General Harwant Krishan.
He was speaking at the valedictory function held on the passing out of the first batch of this course at IIM-I auditorium today.
Major General Krishan said that the Ex-Service Men (ESM) are lucky in the way that they are better equipped to deal with management issues as their attitude and conduct is moulded to a more desirous level of perfection. In their earlier career they have led men and in their future endeavours they will lead their team from their respective companies.
The values of integrity, loyalty and ability to face all odds, while working with zeal under trying circumstances gives them an edge over others.
Though the course is of a short-term duration and not the usual two-year type, the ESM learn as much from their course and comprehend the teachings of their faculty by putting in dedication. He advised the pass outs to grab every opportunity coming their way and not hesitate to move out, as the first step is crucial in ascending the ladder to success.

{{/usCountry}}Statistics reveal that ESM population in the country is 24 lakh, war widow population is 4.2 lakh and on average 60,000 armed forces personnel including 20,000 officers retire from service every year.
The DGR functioning under the department of ESM Welfare in the Ministry of Defence is laying greater emphasis on self-employment ventures for ESM by way of entrepreneurship. The DGR provides specialised training, technical support and also assist in marketing. The training is free for PBOR and only 40 per cent of the actual expense is charged from the officers, while loan is provided through SMFEX and national equity funds.
IIM-I Director Dr SP Parashar said that the batch of 41 participant officers have fulfilled the objective their course, while fully adhering to the ‘guru-shishya’ tradition. The participants are now better equipped with required skills and insight needed in the corporate world, which would be their new front in the civil sector.
IIM-I was one of the first institutes to start such a course, the pilot project for which was successfully run in MDI, Gurgaon and is currently being offered in IIMs at Ahemdabad, Bangalore and Kolkata.
He said that the alumni raise the name of their alma-mater and said with determination that they would keep the flag of the IIM and military flying high.
Captain Kavita Singh, Commander Chandoli, Captain Vikram Sandhu, Major Sandeep Soni and other course participants gave their feedback praising their centre for learning and asking for streamlining placement procedure and reducing number of electives. Course professor Sunita Rai conducted the ceremony. Course conductor Professor Dr PK Chande proposed the vote of thanks.
