Degsy bags award for best screen-writing

Single Carlton's thought-provoking series of half-hour monologues from Black and Asian comedy performers, produced by Parminder Vir OBE, has won an award at the Screen Nation Film and Television Awards 2003.

Degsy, written by Tunde Babalola, was awarded the Best Achievement in Screenwriting (Film/TV) at the prestigious ceremony, held at The Empire, Leicester Square on September 10.

Starring Don Gilet, Degsy tells the story of Peckham's very own Casanova, who prides himself on his ability to get the ladies into bed. Eight children and a nasty accident later, Degsy realises that there is more to life than being a Don Juan, and sets out to change his lady-killer ways.

This is the latest award to go to Single Voices. Another of the eight monologues, The Prince of Dalston, starring Felix Dexter, won him the Best Actor award at the BT Emma Awards.

Babalola and Dexter are now collaborating to develop The Prince of Dalston into a feature-length script, with support from the UK Film Council's Development Fund.
