Officials said taxi driver Ram Kumar and Niranjan Mandal, a quack, were arrested from Hari Nagar and Bawana respectively on Wednesday. They said police had been on the lookout for these people since the crime was committed July 20, 2005.

The victim was abducted from near her shanty at Mayapuri in southwest Delhi in the early hours as she was headed for the bushes to relieve herself.

Four men had bundled her into a car and repeatedly raped her in the moving vehicle before dumping her near Saraswati Vihar.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Neeraj Thakur said: "We first arrested Kumar and later Mandal was arrested on the basis of information given by Kumar."

Thakur said police were still looking for the two other men involved in the crime. "We have identified them and teams have been sent to nab them."

The rape case shocked the capital as it had occurred just three months after a college student was kidnapped and raped on May 7, 2005, at Dhaula Kuan in southwest Delhi. There were a total of 642 rapes, or more than one every day, in the national capital last year.
