The Delhi Electoral Office is conducting an enquiry into the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) allegation that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal had three voter ID cards issued in his name.
The BJP had complained to the Election Commission on Sunday that Kejriwal had voter identity cards from three different Indian constituencies. Keeping more than one voter ID card from different constituencies is an offence that can lead to one year imprisonment and a fine or both.
“We have asked the deputy commissioners of New Delhi and Northeast districts to conduct an enquiry by Tuesday and submit their reports,” said Delhi’s Chief Electoral Officer Vijay Dev. He said that the forms filled by Kejriwal would be examined to see the addresses he has filled and if these are correctly filled or not. Dev said that hiding facts about earlier voter ID cards is an offence under Section 31 of the Representation of the People Act.
BJP has alleged that Kejriwal is a voter in two constituencies in Delhi and one in UP. The party claimed that the AAP leader’s name is there in the voters list of Sahibabad Constituency in UP (ID No. XPD4299798), Seema Puri Constituency in Delhi (ID No. XPD4299798) and New Delhi Constituency (ID No. SJE1763589).
