Altogether 53.2 per cent of Delhi's 84.88 lakh voters exercised their franchise to elect the next 70-member Assembly on Monday, marking a three per cent increase over the turnout in the last Assembly polls, Delhi Electoral Office said on Tuesday.
Significantly, Moti Nagar constituency of BJP's chief ministerial candidate Madan Lal Khurana recorded the highest voting of 62.37 per cent, according to the figures released by the Electoral Office in Delhi.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's Gole Market constituency witnessed the third lowest turnout at 43.77 per cent after R K Puram (40.27 per cent) and Sarojini Nagar (43.63 per cent), it said.
Other constituencies that witnessed a high turnout included Krishna Nagar (61.76 per cent), Narela (60.67 per cent), Tilak Nagar (60.64 per cent), Rohtas Nagar (59.99 per cent) and Tri Nagar (59.93 per cent).
The electoral fortunes of 817 candidates, including the Chief Minister, her four ministerial colleagues M S Saathi, Ajay Maken, A K Walia and R K Chauhan, Assembly speaker Subhash Chopra and Delhi Congress chief Choudhary Prem Singh were at stake besides former Chief Minister Khurana.
The turnout marked a reversal in the declining trend of voters exercising their franchise. The last Assembly polls in 1998 had witnessed a turnout of 48.99 per cent, a sharp decrease of about seven per cent from the 65.75 per cent in the 1993 elections.
