"The death of Ram Shewalkar is a major blow for Marathi literature," Deshmukh said in a statement in Mumbai.

Former state home minister and NCP leader R R Patil as well as RPI leader Ramdas Athawale have also expressed condolences over the writer's demise.

The 78-year-old noted Marathi writer, orator and literary figure of Maharashtra, Prof Shewalkar died of a massive cardiac arrest here this morning at his residence.
