The government has offered to facilitate bank loans for rebuilding demolished buildings. Is it possible buildings like 1 and 2 MG Road and many others could be rebuilt? Not likely as of now, says the MCD.
However, builders around the city have already started reconstructing their demolished buildings, anticipating recommendations of the Tejendra Khanna committee would be implemented.
A notification by the central government has put a one-year moratorium on the court-ordered sealing and demolition drives. Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy has said the government can also facilitate bank loans to those people whose houses have been demolished but can now be regularised under the new law.
The MCD however says that if someone whose house was demolished decides to rebuild it now, he has to adhere to existing building bylaws. “Until the new law comes into force, no one can rebuild properties as they were before demolition. They will have construct it as per the existing rules and the sanctioned plan,” said Deep Mathur, Director (Information), MCD.
Coming back to MG Road, there is no chance that the famous fashion hubs of 1 and 2 MG Road could be rebuilt anytime soon. “These were illegal as per existing rules and were therefore demolished. Only if the new rules allows such commercial structures in a Lal Dora area, there could be chance of these being reconstructed,” said a senior MCD official. But what happens to the three properties -- MG 1, 2 and 13 -- that are rendered dangerous after demolition and their rubble that threatens to block the busy MG Road? “The MCD has to remove the rubble, for which the owner has to pay. However we need to float tenders to remove such huge structures,” he said.
