The DMK has no intention to allow the UPA government to fall even though the party is not too happy with the Congress on many issues including the progress of the 2G case probe and the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils.
That should come as a relief for the Congress, which is grappling with unruly Trinamool Congress, another ally of the UPA, over the issue of rail fare hike. The DMK is the largest ally of the Congress-led UPA with 18 members after Trinamool Congress.
On Thursday, TR Baalu, DMK's parliamentary party leader said, "We are with the government." DMK leaders said they had been assured by the government that it would keep the sentiments in Tamil Nadu in mind while voting in UN. So the party will wait for what India does on voting.
A party leader said the DMK's veiled warning to the UPA government earlier to back a US resolution condemning Sri Lanka at UNHRC was only posturing to "win the hearts of the Tamils and pro-Tamil parties" ahead of the Sankarankoil assembly by-poll rather than a serious threat to pull out of the central government.
Party sources said DMK chief M Karunanidhi's threat earlier that his party executive may review support to the UPA if the government voted against the US backed resolution coming up on March 23 at the human rights conference in Geneva was only to give an impression that the DMK with its 18 MPs is still a potent force, even though it suffered a humiliating loss in assembly elections last year.
