An Orissa woman has been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing her two children apparently because a devil told her to do so in a dream.

Mamata Barik, a resident of Badagualipada village in Puri district, was awarded the sentence by a local court two-and-a-half years after her crime on Aug 14, 2003.

Lawyers said on Wednesday that Mamata took her children, three-year-old Debasis and nine-year-old Sobha, to the village pond behind her house in the dead of night and drowned them.

She then returned home and told her mother-in-law that she had killed her children on the instructions of the devil who had appeared in a dream.

Her husband Dayanidhi Barik was staying in Bhubaneswar at the time.
