NEWLY APPOINTED director general of police Bua Singh will undertake a three-day whirlwind tour of five zones to review the law and order situation. The quick visits have been planned to gear up the police machinery at the district level.
As part of this process, some top-level changes in the police administration are in the offing. There are moves afoot for another shake-up at the DGP headquarters.
With Bua Singh’s appointment as the DGP, the government shifted ADG (Law and Order) Palanivel and ADG (Crime) RK Tiwari. Now, inspector general (Crime) Praveen Singh tops the ‘hit list’. Praveen Singh was known for his proximity to outgoing DGP Yashpal Singh. Tiwari, too, had to go for this reason. Palanivel, was however, rewarded with the plum post of the ADG (PAC) for his neutrality.
With Varanasi still to come out of the shock of last month’s terrorist attack, the DGP has planned to visit the temple town on April 7 to assess the situation and help restore the confidence of the people. He will also visit the Allahabad zone the same day. This zone has been facing the onslaught of Mafioso-turned-politicians. He will visit Bareilly and Meerut on April 8. He will wind up the tour with a visit to Gorakhpur on April 9. The DGP has an action plan to improve the situation, which is likely to be implemented gradually. Since, the government wanted people’s perception to be reflected on the law and order issue, efforts are being made in this direction.
Last month, after the Varanasi blasts, the State Government, instead of directing the then DGP Yashpal Singh to go to the city, had asked Bua Singh, who was then DG PAC, to rush there, along with ADG (Law and Order) A Palanivel. Bua Singh had then taken police officers to task for slackness in security arrangements. Thereafter, the then SSP Navniet Sikera was shunted out of Varanasi. He is still attached to the DGP office. With rising crime graph in the five zones, the possibility some heads rolling cannot be ruled out.
