A shattered windscreen and people running for cover is a sight out of a war zone. Not from the peaceful Wanderers.
However, thanks to MS Dhoni’s bludgeoning hits, a part of the stadium briefly turned into a dangerous zone. The skipper had been working quietly on his batting, spending plenty of time practicing defensive strokes at the nets. It was a matter of time before his instincts took over.
The nets, where the teams bat at the Wanderers, is on the edge of the practice arena and next to the path that separates it from the main ground. The path has foodstalls, while cars, loading and unloading stuff for the big day on Thursday, are also parked here. So, if a batsman like Dhoni hits across the line, it goes out on the road.
A lady, setting up a stall on the path, examined a dent left by the skipper’s hit on her pick-up. “I want the guy who hit this to come and sign this,” she called out. The practice arena is at a height, so the India players didn’t hear her and Dhoni continued with his hits.
One of the officials in charge of the arrangements, who suffered too, said, “Who is this bl**dy guy breaking everyone’s windscreens. He broke my truck’s windscreen,” he yelled.
