A traditional Congress bastion, the key Parliamentary constituency of Dhubri bordering Bangladesh, with predominantly minority voters is set to spring a surprise as the three main contending parties -- Congress, AGP and BJP -- is beset with infighting.

Congress has nominated Anowar Hussain denying ticket to three-time Parliamentarian Abdul Hamid and this has become a major cause of worry for the party candidate as the former MP and his supporters are refusing to cooperate with him during campaigning.

The Congress was expected to have a straight contest with the AGP candidate Afzalur Rahman but the latter's pitch appears to be queered with the jumping of former AGP chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta's wife and former Rajya Sabha member Dr Jayshree Goswami Mahanta into the fray as an independent candidate leading to her expulsion from the party.

The AGP is a divided house in the district with three sitting AGP MLAs pledging support for Goswami-Mahanta and this has made the task difficult for the official party candidate.
