We do expect this of a Britney Spears, as we wrote in these columns earlier. But the British aristocracy appears soon to be the sort of trailer park biodegradables, given the endless information heaped on us about ex-Princess Diana, now dead for more than ten years. Much like that other poor girl made rich by dint of marriage Eva Peron, Diana’s life now seems to have become the stuff of soap operas of a low and vulgar (in the original as well as modern sense of the word) nature.

The young, beautiful woman who once captured the imagination of the world has now been reduced to a farcical fool who did not know what was either good for her or her children whom she apparently adored. We now learn — like we needed to know all this like a hole in the head — that her mother called her less than flattering names because of her association with Muslim men. We have endlessly heard from Mohammed Fayed the conspiracy theories about the death of Diana and his son Dodi. And further revelations from a Pakistan-born surgeon whom she apparently had a liaison with. Not a day passes without some story that she wanted her older son to succeed to the throne over her estranged husband. Or the fact that she thought her husband’s paramour was a rotweiller. We have also heard of supposed pregnancies and, as all crime novels would have it, the butler is spilling the beans.
