Govt’s poser to officials
IN ITS latest bid to fight the dowry menace, the State Government has issued yet another order asking all its married officials, including the IAS officers, who have joined the service on or after March 31, 2004, to give a declaration to their respective appointing authority that they have not taken any dowry from their in-laws.
In the letter (No. 2729/60-3-06/6 AQ/2000 dated September 2) issued by the Women and Child Welfare Department to all principal secretaries, divisional commissioners, district magistrates, head of the departments and others, specific directives have been issued to collect the declarations from the ‘eligible’ government officers and apprise the respective departments of the same immediately.
This circular is in continuation of an earlier directive in which the unmarried state government officers, including the IAS and IPS officers, were asked to submit a signed declaration to their respective appointing authority soon after their marriage that they had not taken any dowry in any form.
A proposal to bring the elected representatives also in the fold was under active consideration of the government, said a senior government official responsible for effective implementation of the anti-dowry laws and various government decisions taken to fight the dowry menace.
The government has already announced to observe November 26 as ‘anti-dowry day’ on the recommendation of the National Women Commission and has already issued circular to organise seminars etc. in colleges, schools and other departments on November 26 to create awareness among the people against dowry. Besides, anti-dowry advisory boards have been set up in 65 districts where the district probation officers have been nominated as district anti-dowry officers while the director of the women welfare has been made chief anti-dowry officer in the state for better coordination and effective implementation of various anti-dowry measures taken by the government.
