In a strongly-worded missive to the SSP he has stated, “It appears that you are not being able to render necessary directions to your subordinates in controlling the crime graph which had been soaring”. The situation is objectionable. “This also goes to show that station officers, inspectors, circle officers and additional SP’s under you are not taking the required interest in performing their prime duty of controlling crime despite repeated reservations expressed by the Inspector General and the Director General of Police,” states the letter.

His repeated directives for crime control were also not being taken seriously, says the DIG.

Frequent transfer of police personnel and their shifting from one place to the another also becomes a stumbling block in the control of crime. Several sensational crimes committed recently were the handwork of criminals from outside. This goes to prove that cops were faltering in intelligence gathering, says the DIG in his letter.

Eleven murders have been committed in the first fifteen days of this month in comparison to just one murder in the same period last month. Similarly, there has been an increase in cases of burglary, vehicle thefts, attempted murders, riots chain snatching and crime against SC/ST including harassment of women.

While these cases are for the first fortnight of the month there has been a general increase in crime from the beginning of the year till the first fortnight of September. this includes burglary, theft of weapons and vehicles, kidnapping for ransom, kidnapping, harassment of women, rape, kidnapping of women, molestation, chain snatching, dowry murders, and murder and rape of SC/ST women, says the DIG.

Action is also to be initiated against hardened criminals with rewards offered for their capture, listed mafia gangs and the ‘top 20’ criminals. The DIG has also asked the SSP to keep him informed about all the developments and steps taken by him to check crime.
