Human dignity is a splendid phenomenon. How did it emerge and why is it splendid? Before dignity emerged, life had to emerge. Without life, there is no dignity of life. Life formed itself but slowly.
When the amoebas emerged, that was an impressive step, for they are semi-intelligent organisms capable to react to the environment.
Then the apes moved down from the trees and started to walk upright, sensing this was the way for the future dignified beings. Then the apes started using sticks, as tools, sensing that intelligence would be required for future beings beholding with dignity.
The further we evolve, the more upright and ascending we become in our posture and thinking. Then art was created to express our aspirations.
The transcendent man emerged, trying to reach the heavenly realm; and also trying to understand his soul.
What is heaven for if you don’t have the soul? And what is the soul for if there is no heaven? This was exactly when dignity was created. For it is this attribute of the human life when life is proud of itself for walking upright. Dignity is a resounding assurance that we are the children of heaven and earth alike. Dignity is the visible essence of our spirituality.
This form of dignity — as conveying our natural spirituality — was known in ancient times too. It survived to our times among tribal people, especially among Native Americans.
