On Monday afternoon, Singh was on his way to address a function organised by the Kshatriya Mahasabha when Anil Singh Chandel, who claimed to be president of a rival faction of the Mahasabha, blocked his car and asked him not to attend the event.

When the Congress leader insisted on participating in the function, the protestors raised slogans and waved black flags. Singh allegedly lost his cool and hit Chandel.

According to eyewitnesses, Chandel suffered bruises near his eye and was taken to the district hospital in Ujjain for treatment.

Chandel alleged that Singh had punched him in the mouth. At the district hospital, he complained of pain in his ears and forehead.

Singh denied Chandel’s allegation, saying he had not beaten up anyone.

He had only tried to pacify the protestors when they stopped his car, he claimed.

Police personnel at the spot failed to control the mob. Chandel has lodged a complaint at the Kotwali police station against the Congress leader, accusing him of misbehaviour and assault. But the police are yet to register a case.

However, a case of obstructing the convoy of the former chief minister has been registered against Chandel and others, police said.
