The Edison education department is actively considering adding the Indian festival of lights to the school calendar's list of holidays, said the Home News Tribune. The Chinese New Year is also being considered due to increase in the number of Chinese students in local schools.

Although there is no specific data available, around 41 per cent of the school students are Asians, according to the township public school website.

The proposal to add the new holidays to the school calendar was presented by parents and several associations during a meeting held in April by the human relations committee of the board of education.

"Right now we are in the preliminary stage of looking at and trying to plan next year's calendar," said Superintendent of Schools Carol A Toth.
