TURNING A blind eye to public complaints will now spell serious trouble for officials . The district authorities on Thursday issued orders for seizure of accounts of any official found ignoring the grievances of the complainants.

The first such order issued by the District Magistrate was directed at the district treasury. The order fixed the responsibility of the Chief Treasury Officer to make sure the complaints filed on Janata Diwas were disposed of by his subordinates within a stipulated time. In case of failure to do so, not only would his junior colleagues have their salary accounts frozen, even he would have to forfeit his salary at the end of the month.

The officials say the move comes in view of the chief minister’s strict posture on delayed disposal of complaints listed on Janata Diwas.

The CM had stressed on holding regular Janata Diwas at the tehsil headquarters in the past too and had asked the party leaders, district party presidents and public representatives to join the officials on these occasions to ensure that the complaints were disposed of at the earliest.

According to the officials, the maximum number of complaints are related to the police department, followed by revenue department, irrigation and civic amenities. Initially the concept evoked a good response but it dwindled considerably in the past two months, primarily because of low rate of disposal of complaints.

With this in mind, DM Anurag Srivastava decided to herd his flock with an iron rod. Likewise, Commissioner Kanpur division, Anita Bhatnagar Jain, also convened a meeting late Thursday evening to discuss the official laxity in disposing of the complaints. She backed the DM’s new mechanism and said it would stretch to all the departments and the heads must act or face the consequences.
