After having suffered humiliation at the hands of AIADMK-led coalition in the April 13 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, DMK's fortunes will be put to litmus test in the form of next month's local body polls, as political parties have set the ball rolling to face the electoral challenge.
Beset with problems including the poll debacle and succession issues, DMK will look to redeem itself by performing well in the elections and continue its dominance in the local administration even as the ruling AIADMK looks to stretch its winning ways.
The AIADMK has not only promised to hold the polls in October at the end of the term of the present bodies, but has also empowered the voters to directly vote for the corporation mayors and municipal chairmen of their choice.
The laws were amended last week by way of a bill that was adopted by the state assembly amidst DMK's boycott of the ongoing budget session.
Low on morale following the arrest of former ministers and others in connection with landgrab complaints, some of them grassroots workers, DMK has complained that "vindictive action" was being taken against the accused to intimidate its workers ahead of the polls.
