The Tamil Nadu-based party, which pulled out of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in March, apparently took offence to the PM saying at a press meet that he was the "one who insisted spectrum allocation should be transparent, fair".

DMK leader A Raja had resigned as the telecom minister in November 2010 in the wake of the scam, but maintained it was not to be interpreted as an admission of guilt.

"If Raja is responsible as minister for 2G, the PM is responsible for Coalgate (coal allocation scam)," DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said.

Elangovan, however, added that Raja was not guilty of any wrongdoing. "The prime minister and finance minister were in the loop about everything."

The party’s aggression is reinforcement of its stated position that it will take the issue to the people during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and defend Raja.
