Takkar, who has a bachelors' degree in ayurveda, was allegedly carrying out illegal abortions at her sister Dr Parul Mastaan's residence when a team constituted by deputy commissioner Ashok Sangwan raided the clinic in Saraswati colony.

Haryana is infamous for its adverse sex-ratio and Yamunanagar is one of the districts with the poorest male-female ratios.

Spokesperson of the health department told HT that one Geeta, wife of Sushil Kumar had undergone termination of three-month pregnancy on Monday. Her attendants ran away from the place when they came to know about the impending raid. Geeta was, however, arrested.

But the foetus could not be recovered as it was flushed down the toilet.

SHO, Rajeev Miglani told HT, "Dr Takkar has been kept judicial custody. We will try to track down the entire chain of doctors involved, including the doctor who referred her to the ultrasound centre."

The raid followed a news report that appeared in the May 14 edition of HT. It had been reported that a four-and-a-half-month pregnant woman Gulshan Begum was allegedly forced to abort the girl child she was carrying.

It was only after psychologists, Dr Richa (district child protection officer) and Dr Megha (child protection officer) spoke to Gulshan, and after a verification of her claims that the clinic was raided.
