HER PARENTS thought her to be the Devil’s play. However, KGMU doctors proved she wasn’t a four-legged creature, but an incomplete twin, who required a surgical correction.
The surgery was performed on Monday. It was rare, but successful, say doctors of Paediatric Surgery Department at KGMU who gave a three-month-old incomplete female twin a chance to lead a normal life.
The parasitic heterotopic foetus had developed pairs of appendix, colon, anal way and vagina along with a pair of the external organs feet. However, further development could not be made hence the child remained incomplete at her birth.
Born in Malihabad area to one Ramdevi the child was admitted to KGMU a few days back. But, the treatment could not be given owing to nurses’ strike.
However, doctors managed to study the entire anatomy of the child through Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Computed Topography Scan where they found the root of problem with the pairs of internal and external organs.
The challenge was to remove the excess organs without disturbing the functioning of the normal ones and this was done in a seven- and-a-half hour surgery. Maintaining the heart equilibrium was another challenge for the doctors of anaesthesia department.

Anaesthesia was given by Dr GP Singh and Dr Manu Pathak.

{{/usCountry}}“The uterus were left untouched as removing them was not necessary while the two vagina were joined together on advice from the doctor from Gynaecology department,” said Dr Kuril.
The parents were initially terrified by the incomplete growth as the child was said to be a result of some evil spirit.
However, after the operation was successful the parents Ramdevi and father Ramdeen were in tears to express thanks to the doctors.
The child would be discharged after two weeks.
