Domestic violence against women is widely prevalent in Gurgaon. As many as 22 cases of domestic violence have been reported till February 13 this year.
According to the women and child welfare department, about 20 cases on an average are reported every month in the district.
Last year, a total of 181 such cases were reported from various parts of the city.
However, social activists claim the number of cases of violence against women within the four walls of homes is much higher. Only a few cases are reported as women fear increased violence from in-laws if they take legal action.
Meena Kumari, protection officer of women cell, women and child welfare department, said, "With the commercialisation of weddings in the region, people have become greedier. In such a condition, daughters of poor parents become victims of domestic violence."
In order to prevent such cases, now the protection officer can file a case on behalf of a victim.
Several non-government organisations and groups of women have come forward to help a victim whenever there is an indication of domestic violence.

{{/usCountry}}"The official figures do not reflect the real picture of the state of women as many avoid lodging a complaint. The shameful trend of increasing crimes against women is aptly reflected by the poor sex ratio in the region," she said.
The sex ratio in Gurgaon as per 2011 census is 853 females against 1,000 males, while it is 877 females against 1,000 males in Haryana.
