The issue of common wall between two adjacent houses in Huda sectors has become a major concern for the residents who have urged the town and country planning department to amend the bylaws.
The residents pointed out the difficulties being faced by them due to the common wall concept at the time of construction of houses.
As per the existing norm, each house owner in Huda sectors has to share walls with his immediate neighbours.
The director general of town and country planning, TC Gupta, has assured the residents that he will discuss the matter and seek experts' opinion from Punjab Technical Engineering College.
“I am not sure whether common wall is good in earthquake or not. I assure that appropriate steps will be taken after getting advice from experts,” the DG said, adding, “after all, it is your choice and I am committed to address them”.
According to residents, some plot owners occupy 4-5 inches of the empty plot in their neighbourhood, provoking others to do the same.
“Due to the forced common wall rule, whosoever constructs the house first occupies 4-5 inches of land of his neighbouring plot. This forces others to do the same as otherwise he will lose his land,” said Sanjiv Saxena, a resident.

“The structure cannot be strong on a common wall and it also causes dispute between two neighbours,” said Vivek Logani, an architect.
