Expressing concern over the increased cases of doping among Indian athletes, 'Sprint Queen' P T Usha says a more effective dope control system should be adopted to save the country from blushes at international meets.
Usha said the dope control system in the country should be made stricter to prevent athletes from opting for the wrong way to stardom.
"It's not possible that the athletes will become dope victims without knowing about it. To make a mark at international events, an athlete must be around 18 years of age. At this stage they should know about it and adopt precautions.
"It is important that the dope control mechanism is tightened enough to discourage them," she said on the sidelines of a function here last night.
Usha said the junior athletes should be strongly deterred from falling for evil means.
"The basic thing is the juniors should not be encouraged at all for doping. They should not worry about making money," she said.
While regretting that the performance of the athletes was not of a very high standard, the ace sprinter hoped that they would fare better in the forthcoming Doha Asian Games. More
