Evidently, the aim is to hook legions of Twilight fans with yet another otherworldly teen romance. And the adaptation of a young-adult novel, the first in a planned six volume series, is more than likely to keep its target audience engrossed.
As for the others, they might as well sit back and endure the dreary wish-fulfillment fantasy.
A teenager (Pettyfer) enrolled at an Ohio high school is in fact, one of the last humanoid aliens from another planet.
Constantly on the run from genocidal space assassins, the titular fourth extraterrestrial falls for his perky photographer classmate (Agron). Cue a colossal intergalactic showdown — at the school’s football field, no less — to decide the fate of our planet.
Director Caruso (Disturbia) displays a poor instinct for shaping the events into a coherent narrative. The wussy screenplay, punctuated with whiz-bang action scenes, is geared to the lowest common denominator. The resolution shamelessly set up the possibility of a sequel.
Making her big-screen debut, Dianne Agron, from the hit TV series, Glee, is camera-friendly. But that’s about it. Noting to rave or rant about, I Am Number Four is at most, worth a passing glance.
