Next time if you are caught driving in an inebriated state, the traffic police may not only confiscate your driver’s licence but also your car.
The traffic police started this initiative on March 30, after they found that most of the seized licences had fake addresses.
Deputy Commissioner of Traffic Police (Suburbs) Harish Baijal said when a person is caught drink driving, the police seize the vehicle’s original documents. If the driver does not have the documents at that time, his/her licence is taken.
But now if the driver fails to provide the documents, the vehicle will be seized. The traffic police have confiscated 62 vehicles till date.
“The vehicles will be released when the original documents are produced,” said Baijal. “Under Section 207 of the Motor Vehicles Act, a vehicle can be seized and released only when the original registration book or the driver’s voter card is produced to confirm the address.”
“In some cases, when a policeman went to the address mentioned in the licence to issue court summons, he did not find the accused there,” said Baijal.
There have been over 100 such instances when court summons could not sent to the person concerned because he/she was not found at the address. So, confiscating the vehicle is a full-proof method to make sure that the accused comes to court.

{{/usCountry}}“Either the driver has changed residence or submitted a fake residential proof to acquire the licence,” said Baijal.
The police suspect that some of those who have not collected their seized licences may have had made duplicate ones.
