The inhabitants of Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, have been facing acute drinking water problem despite monsoon rains throughout the state.

M Dawngliana, Chief Engineer of the state Public Health Engeneering Department, told PTI today that the water supply system failed as the water of Tlawng river, from where water was pumped to the two lakh Aizawlites, was not fit for human consumption.

"We do not have enough alums to purify and treat the river water for human consumption", he said adding measures were being taken to improve the situation.
