A major fire broke out in the Howrah-bound Toofan Express train near Mughalsarai in UP early on Monday morning and "some casualties" were feared as panic-stricken passengers jumped from the moving train.
"The blaze broke out in five bogies of Sriganganagar-Howrah Toofan Express train at 7.30 am between Darauli and Dildar Nagar railway stations of the East Central Railway," Mughalsarai Divisional Railway Manager Vijay Mohan said.
He said "some casualties are feared as some of the passengers jumped from the moving train in panic".
The cause of the fire was not known, he added.
The blaze was noticed by the driver of a goods train and he alerted the Toofan Mail driver who applied emergency brakes, Mohan said, adding, accident and relief vans have reached the spot.
The traffic on the route has been affected and other bogies of the Toofan Mail have been moved to Dildar Nagar and Darauli railway stations, he said.
An inquiry has been ordered into the incident, he added.
Additional Railway Manager of the Division AK Sharma and other senior railway officials were on the spot to supervise relief and rescue operations.
