Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Harish Baijal said that during a routine checking at Mankhurd junction, Trombay traffic division officer S Pawar found a Tata Sumo driven in an undisciplined manner. When the vehicle was stopped for checking, Pawar found it belonged to the Bagde motor training school in Trombay.

The instructor was identified as Abdul Shaikh (30) and he was reportedly training students at the time. Shaikh, a resident of Govandi, taught about 40 students a day, the police said.

“Pawar found that Shaikh, who was controlling the vehicle from the seat next to the driver, was heavily under the influence of alcohol,” said Baijal. “Shaikh was then asked to go through a breath analyser test and it was recorded that the alcohol content in his blood was shockingly high at 499 mg/100 ml.”

Every training vehicle has dual controls so that the instructor can change gears, and handle the clutch and pedal. “It’s not possible for a drunk instructor to teach students the rules of driving,” said Baijal.

“There are over 300 motor training schools in the city and if the instructors are not able to teach the students the rules of driving, how will they make good drivers? The result of such training would only add to the accidents in the city,” Baijal said. “Every training school should ensure that they follow the traffic rules in order to teach them.”
