The Gurgaon police have chalked out a plan to carry out special drive against drunken driving, starting Wednesday night. Recently, the police discussed the issue with a session judge and asked him to impose a heavy fine with at least 15 days imprisonment.
The police have also placed an order for 5,000 breathalyser pipes to carry out this operation. Earlier, police personnel used a straw to determine whether a driver is drunk. But motorists objected to this method of testing, saying it is unhygienic.
“We will pay special attention on busy roads and highways. Some parts of the city where accidents are common will also be thoroughly checked. Patrolling will be done across the city,” said Bharti Arora, DCP (traffic).
The police will start the anti-drunken driving operation from Kherki Dhaula toll road. The authorities may also rope in celebrities to participate in the campaign to make people aware about the dangers of driving after consuming alcohol.
“Deaths due to drunken driving have increased. We will definitely act now,” said Arora.
The 5,000 new breathalyser pipes will also help curb the menace. “We want to make the drive successful. Since people said the straw method was unhygienic, we will switch to a proper method. The pipes will reach us in a day or two. After this, motorists can’t object to test for excess alcohol consumption,” said Arora.

{{/usCountry}}Arora also instructed traffic volunteers to follow the legal process while serving the city. She said the police will take action if any volunteer misbehaved with motorists.
The traffic DCP said people should be careful while driving and not break rules. She said most people think it is safe to speed as long as one is in control, but in reality it’s unsafe.
