DU’s sports infrastructure might soon be in for a major overhaul.
Some five months ago, DU’s vice-chancellor had set up a committee to recommend changes to improve the university sports governance, and also for drafting a ‘sports ordinance’. The committee has almost finalised its recommendations, which it will place before the VC around July 15.
The committee’s recommendations seek to reward talented, performing sportspersons and punish those who don’t perform.
In order to ensure the academic calendar doesn’t come in the way of aspiring sportspersons, the committee suggests, “Any (sports) students failing to appear in examination/s due to their participation in inter-university/national/international tournaments may still be permitted to the next class.”
Also trying to address the marks issue for dedicated sportsperson, it suggests, “All marks earmarked for attendance and tutorials shall be given by sports teachers for all the subjects and not the individual subject teachers, as is the case currently.”
Commenting on the recommendation, a member of the committee said, “We hope to reward sportspersons with marks for the time he spends in the field.”
The committee also recommends to make the going tough for “non-contributing” sportspersons. “Many students who take admissions under the sports quota later refuse to contribute anything to the colleges. We have suggested expulsions, terminations of admissions for all such students,” said a member of the committee.

{{/usCountry}}According to him, “Even though colleges currently take an undertaking regarding participation by sports students but, in absence of any university law, nothing concrete is done against many erring sports persons.”
Similarly, the committee also wants to encourage sportspersons to take up higher education. “Currently there is no assistance for a sportsperson who wants to pursue higher studies if there is an entrance exam in the subject. Since most popular subjects have entrances except for courses like MA (Sanskrit), MA (Urdu) — hardly any sportsperson gets to study further,” said the member.
In order to see more sportspersons take up higher studies, it suggests forming of a “Central Sports Admission Committee (SAC)” and making “sports the central, and only criteria for admission to higher education — for all sportspersons, irrespective of courses”.
Terming these recommendations a major progress, the member said, “Till now we don’t have any real law, ordinance that dictates the sports governance in DU. It will be on suggestions of our report that the VC would come up with a draft ordinance on sports for DU.”
