Those applicants who do not make it to Delhi University’s regular courses need not lose heart. The varsity’s School of Open Learning has several options ready for them.
Although SOL is DU’s distance learning wing, officials insist that there is no major difference between the courses offered.
“The applicants who may not make it to DU’s colleges should not lose heart, because the option of studying SOL is still available. The school offers several benefits to its students, including a relaxed schedule that allows them to pursue courses such as chartered accountancy, and the option of doing a job. At the same time, the students have the same curriculum and methodology of study as a regular DU student,” Gulshan Sawhney, the varsity’s deputy dean of student welfare, said.
What may be preventing more people from applying to SOL is a stigma over the social and academic value of its degrees. But the officials say SOL degrees are in no way “lesser”. Not only are students given the same degrees, but, the officials added, they have the benefit of registering for placements in the first year of study itself.

{{/usCountry}}“Students believe that a degree from SOL — which is an institute of distance learning — is lesser than regular DU degrees. But this is a misconception, because every student gets the same degree bearing the DU stamp,” Sawhney added.
SOL officials said nearly 3,000 aspirants had sought admission for the upcoming academic session. Those, however, who are yet to register should not wait till the penultimate day.
“The learning content and exam pattern are the same as that of a regular DU course. The degree is also uniform. We have admitted 3,000 students for this academic session, but those who wish to join should not wait till the last day,” said HC Pokhriyal, executive director, SOL.
