Phillips established himself as the world’s #1 jumper in 2003 with his dramatic wins at World Indoors and World Outdoors. But he failed to win the gold at the Sydney Olympics where he finished eighth in the finals.
Phillips is the possible successor to emerge since Lewis and Powell retired in 1997. Though a leading medal contender in Athens, Phillips' recent jumps are well off the world record. Phillips won his world title with a jump of 27-3 3/4, and he secured his Athens berth at the Trials by going 27-2.
He is the brightest hope for United States who can restore US dominance in the event.
