An e-mail threat that a human bomb would blow up the US consulate in Chennai on Wednesday set off a security alarm, Police Commissioner Letika Saran said.

She told reporters that the e-mail received on Tuesday, threatened that a human bomb would strike the US consulate in the heart of the city.

"As soon as the threat was brought to our notice by the Consulate, we beefed up security in and around the Consulate premises and deployed a special team to probe the origin of the anonymous e-mail," Saran said.

"We have certain leads that the e-mail could have emanated from the US," she said.

This is the second time an e-mail is creating panic at the US Consulate—the first one to blow up Parliament, which was received at the Consulate in December last, turning out to be hoax.
