Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 222 in the 48th over of their innings as opener Sanath Jayasuriya top-scored with a brilliant 86 from only 65 balls.

South Africa reached their target with 4.5 overs to spare. In-form opener Boeta Dippenaar held the innings together with 87 from 94 deliveries.

The result ensured Australia go through to the best-of-three finals series with South Africa needing to win just one of their last three matches to claim the other spot ahead of Sri Lanka.

Earlier, South African captain Graeme Smith turned from part-time spinner to strike bowler on Tuesday, taking three wickets for 30 runs to begin Sri Lanka's spectacular collapse.

Jayasuriya smashed 86 from 65 balls in a 94-run opening partnership with Jehan Mubarak to give Sri Lanka a strong start, but Smith took three wickets within four overs to begin a decline which ended with Sri Lanka's dismissal in the 48th over.

After Jayasuriya and between the 22nd and 39th overs, when Smith bowled 10 destructive overs and reintroduced Shaun Pollock and Charl Langeveldt, Sri Lanka lost seven wickets for 42 runs. Pollock avoided Jayasuriya's assault at the start of the innings and returned in an effective second spell to claim the wickets of Russel Arnold and Nuwan Kulasekara. Pollock finished with figures of 2-17 from 10 overs.

Three run-outs, costing the wickets of Chaminda Vaas, super-sub Malinga Bandara and Tillakaratne Dilshan, were the final undoing of the Sri Lankan innings.

Vaas fell without scoring, Bandara for 11 and Dilshan was the last man out for 37, ending his defiant stand which spanned the last five partnerships of the innings.
