Eat, pray, rejoice on Easter Sunday

Devotees celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ at Saint Michael’s Church (for Catholics) in Sector 7. It began with the lighting of the holy fire on Friday at 11.30pm. Then the holy mass began at midnight and went on till 1.30pm the next day. People sand the Gloria hymn as the resurrection of Jesus Christ was enacted before their eyes.

Easter eggs were distributed when the prayers ended. “Eggs are symbols of new life,” said Michael Martyr, president of Catholic Association, Gurgaon.

The Epiphany church (for Protestants) in Civil Lines began the celebrations at 5am with the 'sunrise service' when people walked with candles in their hands. “The holy mass and Easter celebrations begin at 8.30am, followed by English and Hindi mass till 12.30 pm,” said Sunil Massey, church member.

After 40 days of fasting, the feasting will continue throughout the day on Saturday. The Easter Sunday begins with a traditional English breakfast of cheese, egg, ham and sausages, followed by a lavish spread during lunch.

“Easter is a much bigger festival for us than Christmas as it celebrates the rise of Jesus Christ,” said Anitha Martyr, who made different delicacies for her family. “My entire extended family also come together at my place to eat. The delicacies include roast chicken, mutton or pork vindaloo (Goan preparation), biryani and Russian salad. There is also a range of desserts,” said Reena Price.
