EC frowns on power theft

The EC has been flooded with complaints that parties are consuming electricity illegally. The panel got 74 cases of power theft by CPM in Kolkata North-East seat.

The Election Commission has been flooded with complaints that political parties in the city are consuming electricity illegally. The Commission has received as many as 74 cases of power theft by the CPI (M) in Kolkata North-East constituency.

The commission has sought the report on the alleged power theft from the city police. When contacted Harman Preet Singh DC (HQ) said he has asked the police stations to look into the complaints.

The maximum number of cases of power theft have been reported from ward number 15 under Manicktala police station in Kolkata North-East constituency.

Meanwhile, A.K. Das, Kolkata district election officer said he has asked the O-Cs of the concerned police stations to disconnect line immediately and to take other legal action permissible under law.

According to Election Commission, almost all the parties are using electricity illegally in the city. However, the police stations at Chitpur, Cossipur, Amherst Street and Manicktala are yet to receive the inquiry order from DC (Headquarters). “I have not received any complaints of power theft till now. As soon as I receive it, I will look into it,” said Anil Jana, O-C of Cossipur where 14 cases of alleged power theft have been reported to Election Commission.
