The CPI unit secretary R Nallakannu was reacting to reporters queries here on the remarks of Election Commissioner N Goplaswamy that the persons concerned could file defamation cases if they felt that there were personal attacks on them during campaigning.

"This kind of derogatory campaigning will go on endlessly if the EC does not intervene," he said.

Referring to the death of 22 persons in a stampede at Lucknow at a function in which sarees were distributed to celebrate the birthday of BJP leader Lalji Tandon, he said the incident disproved the BJP's 'India Shining' claim.

"The stampede and the death of the women proves beyond doubt that India is not shining, as there is poverty in the country", he said. PTI SR APR NNG
